Commune in the province of Matera

This village was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as many archaeological finds in the area show. Some of these finds, and amongst them some vases of the IV century B.C., are kept in the museum in Potenza. From 1400 on, Calciano was given as a fief to several noble families, the last of which was the Pignatelli.

In the village it is possible to see the interesting Main Church, dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, in which an oil painted triptych dated 1503 and representing the ‘Madonna col Bambino’, attributed to Bartolomeo da Pistoia, is kept.

It is worth leaving the village for an excursion in the beautiful state-owned Forest of Gallipoli-Cognato, rich with a luxurious vegetation of Turkey oaks, elms, maples, holm oaks and many other types of trees and a brushwood that offers an immense variety of flowers, amongst them we discover brooms, violets, cyclamens and butcher’s broom.

To enrich the natural show that the Forest offers, there are numerous species of animals such as foxes, badgers, beech martens, wild pigs and deer.
