Commune in the province of Matera

Its name comes from ‘Trigarium’ (racetrack for horses). Its origins date back to 849, when Tricarico was a Longobard stronghold. It subsequently became an earldom in 1048, with the Norman occupation.

In the town, the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built by Robert Guiscard in 1061, is worth visiting due to its great artistic importance.

There are other remarkable constructions.

Tricarico is the birthplace of the peasant poet Rocco Scotellaro, a symbol figure of the political and cultural renewal of southern Italy.

Not very far from the town, it is possible to admire the shrine of Santa Maria delle Fonti, where the town festival takes place on the first Sunday of May.
