Commune in the province of Matera

The town is situated in the River Basento Valley, in an area characterised by deep clayey ravines.

The town was called ‘Pesticium’ in the Roman time and became a feud in the Norman time.

The church of SS. Pietro e Paolo (1542), in the ‘rione Torrevecchia’, is worth visiting. Inside there are engraved wooden altars and XVIII century paintings and some interesting canvases by the Neapolitan school.

The XII century church of Santa Maria del Casale, with a XIV century portal and a XVI century rose window, is very beautiful and so is the church of Sant'Antonio, containing XVII century and XVIII century frescoes and several canvases, among which those by Giovanni Tommaso Guarini and Andrea Vaccaro.

In San Basilio, there is a fortified farm; built as a castle by Ruggero the Norman and subsequently turned into an abbey by the Basil monks, it was made into a farm by the Berlingieri family.
