The origins of this village date back to 1534, when a group of Albanians, in order to escape the occupation of the Muslims, found refuge in this area and called it ‘Minnuglio’. This village became independent in 1810.

In the old centre there are several palaces, such as ‘Palazzo La Canna’, ‘Palazzo Silvestri’, ‘Palazzo Carlomagno’, ‘Palazzo Zito’ and ‘Palazzo Ripa’, all dating from the XVI-XVII centuries. The Parish Church, XVII century, is very interesting.

Not far from this village, in the Pantano Wood, there is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pantano. Its Church was built in 1560 near the cave where the statue of the Madonna was found. This statue has been reproduced since the original was stolen a long time ago.

San Giorgio Lucano, surrounded by several woods with numerous areas well equipped for leisure activities, is also characterised by the landscape of ‘calanchi’, peculiar hollows caused by erosion on clay ground.
