The town, whose origins date back to the IV century B.C., belonged to the Della Marras, who built the castle in 1070, of which there are only a few ruins left; it was dominated by the Carafas and the Spinellis afterwards.
A building worth visiting is the mother church of Santa Maria Assunta, of the Baroque period but rebuilt in the XIX century, which contains a very beautiful XV century statue of St. Rocco, a XVIII century statue of Our Lady of the Rosari and a precious font.
Like in other towns of Basilicata, in Gorgoglione the May festival takes place too: a tree is made up by joining a trunk of a Turkey oak to a holly.
The peculiar and striking position of the town attracts a lot of tourists, especially in summer.
