Commune in the province of Matera
The small town, situated in the river Sinni valley, was a feud belonging to, among others, the Sanseverinos, who were the princes of Salerno, the Vivacqua di Oriolos, the Carpaccios, the Galeotas and the Morras.
Valsinni is well-known as the birthplace of Isabella Morra, the famous poetess of loneliness.
In the area, on Mount Coppola, there are the ruins of a town wall made up of squared blocks arranged in staggered rows, within which there is a water spring and the ruins of the acropolis built in the IV century B.C. and inhabited until the Middle Ages.
The town boasts an ancient tradition of millers, whose symbol is the mill of ‘Palazzo Mauri’, which is still supplied with large stone wheels.
The economy of the town is mostly based on agriculture and livestock breeding.
