Previously known by the name of ‘Civitas Severina’ (from Alessandro Severo who fortified and dominated the town), it was called ‘Mons Cabeosus’ probably because of the presence of many caves in the area. Originally a Byzantine stronghold, it then experienced a succession of feudal families.

Montescaglioso initially developed around the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo (1079), rich in beautiful frescoes.

The XV century mother church of SS. Apostoli Pietro e Paolo, which contains a lot of canvases by the Venetian school, is interesting.

The church of Santo Stefano with a pre-Renaissance portal and the church of the Madonna delle Grazie in Romanesque style are also noteworthy.
