Commune in the province of Potenza
This village is situated on the mountainside of the Mancino Mountain and belongs to the Pollino National Park. It was built up between the X and the XI centuries A.D., with the arrival of Greek monks. It was originally called ‘Kalaurus’, which should mean ‘place in which you can breathe pure air’.
There are two very interesting Palaces, the Martinese and the Mazzilli. In the latter, there are several precious masterpieces, such as the bas-reliefs that represent scenes of the four seasons and the marble medallions, on the sides of the Palace, representing poets, philosophers and other sculptures. Inside the Palace there is a marble fireplace of the XVII century with a faun’s head, some festoons, some marble busts and several bronze objects.
Outside the village there is the Chapel of San Gaetano, patron of the village, and inside it some precious wooden statues and bronze objects.
This village is surrounded by the Titolo Wood and by the Mazzilli Wood, which offer a wide range of mushrooms.
