Commune in the province of Potenza

The origins of this village date back to the destruction of Grumentum, when the refugees from this town looked for shelter in the Agri Valley. Its name seems to come from ‘Castrum Montis Murri’, later changed into ‘Montemurro’. In the Middle Ages this village belonged to several noble families. In 1907 a landslide forced many of its inhabitants to emigrate.

In the higher part of the village there are the Franciscan Church and the Convent of Sant’Antonio (1635). In the Convent there are several frescos representing episodes in the lives of Sant’Antonio and San Francesco. Inside the Church there are a wooden frame with a canvas dating from 1666, a painting representing the Natività (1700) and a Pietà (1800).

This village is famous for being the birthplace of the poet Leonardo Sinisgalli.

This area is surrounded by evocative woods where in autumn chestnuts and several kinds of mushrooms can be found.
