Rionero is a small town at the foot of the Vulture Mountain, which was built in an area rich with natural beauties.
Nearby there are the Monticchio Lakes on whose shore there is S. Michele’s Abbey.
Its historical tradition is connected to the names of Giustino Fortunato, who was actively involved in the ‘Questione Meridionale’ (Southern Question), and of the brigand Crocco. In this area, characterised by small underground caves, called ‘facili’ (easy), brigands used to find shelter.
The town was destroyed by the earthquake of 1694 and then almost completely rebuilt.
In the main square there is ‘Palazzo Fortunato’, in which a rich library and some archaeological finds can be found, such as a little statue of Aphrodite of the I century A.D.
Amongst the several possible cultural itineraries, great interest is given to the Main Church, richly decorated in Baroque style, and the Gothic Church of S. Antonio, in which some works of the XVIII century are kept.
