Commune in the province of Potenza

The origins of this village date back to the late Gothic Period, when this territory was called ‘Castrum Grandinis’.

Near the village there are the ruins of the Angevin Castle and ‘Porta San Giovanni’, an entrance in the ancient walls.

In the old centre there are the old portals of some important palaces, with decorations in engraved stone. Amongst them is Palazzo Cianci, built at the beginning of the XVII century, with a Baroque main door, showing a precious decoration.

In the centre there is also the Chapel of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, built in the XIII century. Inside, there are several artistic works of the XVI and XVII centuries and a relief representing the ‘Madonna di Costantinopoli’.

Nearby there are two archaeological sites: one is in the area called ‘Cannalicchio’, where the remains of a village dating back to the Bronze Age were found; and the other on Monte Giano, where some fragments of ceramics of the Hellenistic Period were found.

Recently the construction of a public astronomical observatory has been started.
