Commune in the province of Potenza
The past of this village is connected to the town of Grumentum. According to some scholars, Sarconi would have been a suburb of this ancient centre.
In this area there are several archaeological finds, in particular some remains of burials, probably belonging to Roman and Carthaginian soldiers that fought in 215 B.C. in a violent battle.
In the old centre there are some ancient palaces with stone portals and balconies in wrought iron. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta was built at the beginning of the XX century as a replacement of the Renaissance one which was destroyed during the 1857 earthquake.
Sarconi is surrounded by rich vegetation and near the Farnie Wood, characterised by timber trees, there is the evocative Amelina Fountain, destination for many tourists in summer.
The economy of this village is mainly based on the cultivation of beans, in several very appreciated qualities. In summer the bean festival is organised. During this event it is also possible to taste other typical products, such as honey and cheese.
