This village was built on a hill overlooking the Avigliano Fiumara.
Its origins probably date back to the VI century B.C., when it was built along a road which connected Metaponto to the Sele Valley. Ruoti used to be a Longobard stronghold, belonging to the ‘Contea di Conza’. Later on it was surrendered to the ‘Contea di Conversano’.
In the old centre there are some beautiful palaces and the Main Church of San Nicola. Inside it, there are a canvas of the XVI century, representing the Madonna del Rosario, some canvases of the XVIII century, representing ‘The Madonna e i Santi’, by Gian Lorenzo Cardone, and a wooden statue of San Nicola, of the XIV century. The dome and the external wall, finished in 1805, were probably made by one of Vanvitelli’s pupils.
Not far from the village there is the ‘Abetina’.
