According to some scholars, Lauria was built in 400 B.C. by a Cretan colony attracted by the beautiful landscape. In the place called ‘Piano dei Peri’, near Trecchina, they founded a town called ‘Iriae’. Later on, its name was changed in ‘Uria’ (golden town). According to other scholars, Lauria was built where the old ‘Lagaria’ used to be.
The present Lauria was built in 1150 by a Basil community.
It has a High Part and a Low Part that are about 1 km away from each other; there are some interesting remarkable constructions.
Not far from the village, in the area called ‘Conserva’, there are some skiing slopes.
The handcraft of stone, wrought iron, and wicked baskets and sieves is well developed.
