Commune in the province of Potenza

This village is on a hill, at a few miles from Potenza. Its name was quoted for the first time in the XII century, as ‘Vineolae’, from the Latin word ‘vinea’ vineyard.

The Main Church was rebuilt in the XVIII century on a previous building. It has only one nave with eight chapels on its sides; inside, there are several canvases, three of which were painted by Pietrafesa.

Near the village there is the Church of the Madonna del Pantano; inside, there are a wooden statue of the ‘Madonna col Bambino’, decorated in pure gold, and two oil canvases by Filippo Mangere (1700).

In the neighbourhood of Pignola, near the Pantano Lake, there is the ‘Natural Reserve’ and the WWF Oasis. Because it is very close to the Rifreddo Wood, which is a summer and winter holiday resort, and to the Sellata skiing resort, Pignola is a major holiday place.

The so called ‘Uglia’ is a typical event in Pignola.
