Commune in the province of Potenza
The origins of this village date back to the III century B.C., during the Second Punic War. In 1494 it became property of the Sanseverino di Bisignano, who built the Castle of the same name, of which only some ruins are still visible.
This village is composed of several smaller centres, the biggest of which is ‘Pedali’.
‘Palazzo Mastropaolo’, XXVII century, with a carved wooden portal, and ‘Palazzo Caporale’, XVII century, are very beautiful. The latter used to belong to a surgeon and is now a private museum with antique furniture, objects, weapons, books and frescos of the Neapolitan School.
Interesting are also the Assunta Church, built in the XVI century, the Main Church dedicated to Santa Caterina da Siena, in Gothic style, the Church of the Santissima Trinità, with a Basil dome, the Convent of Sant’Antonio, having Byzantine origins and located in ‘Pantana’, the ruins of a feudal castle in the old centre.
This village is part of the ‘Parco Nazionale del Pollino’ and is surrounded by a territory rich with vegetation, where apart from having guided excursions, it is possible to organise some interesting walks searching for mushrooms.
