Commune in the province of Potenza
It is situated in the territory of the Vulture Mountain. It took origin from a Basil Convent founded in the X century. In 1042, this village became a Norman fortress, but was then destroyed in 1187 by the population of Melfi and later rebuilt by ‘Guglielmo il Buono’.
The Cathedral, built in the XII century, has a Romanesque portal and a tower bell of 1209.
There are some beautiful Churches, such as San Biagio’s Church, the Church of the Annunziata, in Baroque style, and the Church of Santa Lucia, built by the Normans in the XI century. Inside it, there are some frescos representing episodes of the life of Santa Lucia.
In Rapolla a very interesting Roman sarcophagus was found; it is now kept in the Melfi National Museum.
This village is also well known because of its thermal spa.
